School’s Out: Routines, Head Butting and Tweens

School is out and with it, I’m feeling a little out of sorts. You see, I have a good routine and spend a great deal of quality time with Peanut. Unfortunately, his idea of quality time this summer is trying my patience and getting on my last nerve. Believe me, it has to be the last one. The others are frazzled and gone.

Peanut is a good kid. He’s a great kid. However, the only thing he wants to do this summer is sit in the house and watch TV, play video games or use the computer. He’s a typical 12 year old.

Oh my word, my little boy is 12.

How did that happen? How did the sweet little boy I gave birth to turn into a smelly, petulant tween? Wasn’t it just yesterday I was swaddling him and wearing him in as I went about my daily routine, cuddling him to sleep and helping him learn to walk. Where did all of that time go?

That was a rhetorical question. And one I need to mull internally. After all, I think I’m a good parent. I’m pretty sure I’ve done a decent job so far.

However, I’ve learned a few things. I don’t handle impatience well. Nor do I handle tween attitudes well. Which means I need to go back and look at my own attitudes.

Maybe not all of this is about Peanut. Maybe it’s more about me and my expectations being too great. Maybe it’s because we’re too much alike and the head butting is just something to come to terms with.

Maybe, I’m not ready for my little boy to grow up.
