MOMpreneur: Alisa Grasso of Sassy Soaps & Essentials

Alisa Grasso (Sassy) is an avid organic gardener with over 20 years of experience. She has been growing, drying, and bottling her own organic herbs for friends and family and has incorporated these herbs into all-natural homemade soaps. Sassy Soaps are made with olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, coconut milk, essential oils, along with organic herbs and teas for exfoliation. Alisa’s passion for organics and preserving the environment has spun into a small business. Her all-natural soaps are not only good for your skin, but great for the environment since they contain no preservatives, artificial colors, or fillers that strip the skin of natural oils, making it easier for toxins to be absorbed into the skin. The substances in artificial coloring and preservatives are drying chemicals that can cause severe skin irritations and rashes. Sassy Soaps contain glycerin, a natural by-product, which protects the skin from drying. Commercial soap makers extract glycerin during the production and use it in other beauty products. Sassy Soaps moisturize, kill germs, and prevent toxins from entering the body through the skin. Sassy has now added Bath Salts to her Essentials which are made with essential oils as well.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a full time employee at Lowe’s corporate headquarters in Mooresville as a Product Marketer. I have two girls, Victoria (15) and Brianna (18) who attends UNCG. I have been married to my husband for 6 years and we live in Mooresville with Victoria, our cat Midnight and dog Bella. I have a passion for preserving the environment and for natural and organic products.

What prompted you to start a business? And, how do you stay energized about your work?

I am an entrepreneur at heart. When my children were little, I operated a nail salon out of my home in order to be close to them and still maintain my business. After receiving so many positive comments about my herbs and soaps, I decided to give it a shot and put my products out there to be enjoyed by others. I love networking with people which is a large part of owning your own business and making it successful. I stay energized through meeting new people and especially being able to provide a solution to their skin problems.

How do you balance family life and work? Scheduling?

I am very organized and have my email and calendar on my mobile device so I can respond to people quickly and easily no matter where I am. I block time on my calendar for family time, working out, and time with friends. I am used to a hectic schedule and tend to thrive on it.

Tell us about your workspace.

My business is all done out of my home. The soaps, salts and herbs are all made in the kitchen. I dry the herbs from my garden on a baker’s rack in the kitchen and use the stove and counters to make the soap and salts. I also use the kitchen table to do all of my emails, shipping of products, blogging, and Facebooking. I utilize the Internet for much of my business, including USPS online to ship packages.

What do you do to escape work and family life to just be you?

I like to have time to work out and get in a little dancing. I also enjoy being outdoors to do my gardening.

What advice would you give to moms that want to start a business? Any parting words of wisdom?

I would encourage moms to follow their dreams. Focus on what is important to you, what you are passionate about. Utilize social media to push your information out and you will see it soar!

Great soap. I just tried my first bar and I loved it. I tried one with lavender in it and it felt like it had some exfoliating ability along with the great smell and texture. Soothing for my dry skin.

  2. Great post! Alisa is a mom who does it all! I’m constantly impressed with Alisa’s energy and enthusiasm. And I’m a fan of her soap! I recently tired one of her olive oil soaps on my daughter who has sensitive skin and was happy to see that 1) she didn’t break out 2) her skin was softer and less dry the next morning. Good luck, Alisa! I know you’ll do great.
